Monday, January 28, 2008 7-9 PM Alpena County Annex Local Governance Forum. A panel of area officials from the County, Townships and City will discuss the questions raised in the Michigan LWV Local Governance Study, and will take questions from the audience. Topics include non-partisan elections for the County, possible shifting of positions from elected to appointed, and regional cooperation on services such as safety and water.
Monday, February 11, 2008 12 PM TO 2PM Alpena Community College Local Governance Study Consensus and National Program Planning. We will be discussing the consensus questions on the State Local Governance Study, and also developing our local input into the Program Planning for the LWV National Convention in June.

Cathy Green, NOAA Education Director, will present what's happening behind closed doors at the Maritime Heritage Center.

Sue Maxwell, our league representative, will give us an update on plans for the undeveloped parks Negwegon, Rockport and Thompson's Harbor.

Pat Leahy, Project Manager, will describe the services and operations of Computer Technology Recycling, a new non-profit computer recycling store.

A three-part meeting on environmental concerns presented by the Lake and Riverfront Development Committee. Janice Adams from the DEQ, will present an air and water quality study. Aaron Woldt of the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service will discuss invasive species. Bill Freese of HEAL will discuss local air, water and soil concerns.

Candidates invited are those who have primary completion and include--Candidates for Alcona County Treasurer, Register of Deeds, County Road Commissioner, County Commissioner District 1.
Monday, July 28, 2008 7pm Granum Theater, Alpena Community College Alpena Candidates Forum. The Alpena Candidates Forum for the primary election will be held on Monday, July 28. Candidates invited are those who have primary competition and include Alpena County Board of Commissioners, Michigan House of Representatives, and Circuit Court Judge candidates.

Join us to view and discuss a lively video about the interaction of human society and the environment; is our current way of life sustainable? Ken Dully will give an overview of the book, "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle." We will also review State and National League positions on related environmental issues, and talk about environmental priorities for our local League.

Sunshine Week is about the public's right to know what its government is doing, and why. Sunshine Week seeks to enlighten and empower people to play an active role in their government at all levels, and to give them access to information that makes their lives better and their communities stronger.
