MLK Day Celebration. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration will be held on January 21, Monday at Alpena Community College. Activities will include an afternoon discussion with Matt Dunckel as discussion leader from 2:30-3:45 pm, ACC, CTR 106. The title is "Race as a Cultural Construct," and will include members of Matt's college class and members of the community. A chili supper will be held in the ACC Lumberjack Shack from 5:00-6:15 p.m. The proceeds from this supper provide free laundromat service to those in need. The 6:30 evening program will be in the Granum Theatre, and will feature discussion leaders Tom Orth, Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church and Rev. Bill McClure, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church and a panel of community members that will include people of different ethnic backgrounds. These events are free and all in the community are invited.

Voting Machines, Counting Ballots, etc. Bonnie Friedrich, Alpena County Clerk, Stephany Eller, Alcona Count Clerk, and Ann Marie Main, Presque Isle County Clerk, are preparing a "Family Feud" Quiz Show with County Clerks from surrounding counties. Those in attendance will be able to ask questions. The topics will be election workers, poll watchers, training for those positions and regulations for those positions. Changes in registration because of Promote The Vote may be covered also if the State has that material ready.

It's a time to celebrate our birthday, a time to be updated on the League's current democracy agenda, a time to learn by attending workshops, a time to listen to some topical speakers(including Elaine Weiss, the author of The Women's Hour: the Great Fight to Win the Vote), a time to have fun by meeting up with League friends from around the state, and a time to participate in a historic League event.
